MYAC in the community

MYAC contributes to the cultural life of the greater Chicago area through the following initiatives:

Young Music Scholars Program and Young Music Mentors
The Young Music Scholars Program supplements music education in local public schools by offering scholarship to low-income novice string instrumentalists (Scholars) who demonstrate potential and desire more extensive musical opportunities. Scholars participate weekly in a Midwest Young Artists Conservatory Orchestra and additionally receive weekly private lessons with an instrument-specific teacher. High school Mentors from the most advanced MYAC Symphony Orchestra tutor the Scholars in their practice techniques. The program was developed to promote individual initiative, problem solving, a passion for music and learning, and a collaborative work ethic in a nurturing environment for both Scholars and Mentors.

Beyond the Fort
MYAC chamber groups bring the uplifting spirit of music to senior centers, group homes, and nursing and rehabilitation centers around the Chicago area. Chamber music, in the comfort of familiar surroundings, is a gift that MYAC students are able to give to residents who are unable to get to concerts and do not often have the pleasure of attending live performances. In addition, we consider collaboration with other arts organizations an important part of musical development, and MYAC students have added their voices to enhance the annual Chicago Symphony Orchestra holiday program “Welcome Yule”, while instrumentalists have provided music for events such as Dance Chicago. These collaborations expand the reach of classical music into the community with the talents and passion of our young musicians.

I’Solisti MYAC
This exceptional chamber orchestra is made up of select students from the MYAC orchestral program. This ensemble travels to middle schools and high schools in the Chicago area for in-school performances serving as inspiration and motivation for their peers.

Financial Assistance
MYAC is committed to providing an affordable music program for all interested students. Currently MYAC offers financial assistance to 10% of our students a year, with 5% of students receiving tuition reductions for participating in more than one program, keeping costs of participation affordable. Our financial aid budget has been significantly increased from years past making MYAC ensemble programs accessible to all.

One Score One Chicago
MYAC collaborates with Ravinia in presenting in-school performances for the “One Score, One Chicago" program. Thousands of public school students in Chicago and Waukegan are introduced to classical music thanks to the educational efforts of Ravinia and the enthusiasm and excellence of MYAC orchestral and chamber musicians.

In addition, MYAC offers assistance to public school music programs with sheet music loans, music workshops, and instrument acquisition through our instrument donation program.
