Young Musicians Chamber Music Workshop

A beginning level chamber music experience for young musicians who have completed grade 8 or under as of summer 2009.

Midwest Young Artists is pleased to announce the Third Annual Young Musicians Chamber Music Camp, held at the MYA Center at Fort Sheridan in Highwood, Illinois. Young Musicians Chamber Music Camp is designed to be a beginning level chamber music experience for students in 8th grade or lower as of Fall 2010. There will be one week this year. The camp is open to strings players (violin, viola, cello) and pianists. Prior chamber music experience is not necessary.

Sessions are held in the morning and include 3 hours of instruction each day. The noon hour is utilized as meeting time for all registered students to discuss topics of interest and to have performances.

Faculty

Rhona ReaganRhona Reagen, Viola, Director of Midwest Young Artists Young Musicians Chamber Music Camp: Rhona Reagen has been a Suzuki method violin and viola instructor for over 30 years. She received her Bachelors and Masters degrees with honor and distinction from DePaul University. She has also had advanced pedogogy training with Betty Haag, Dr. Milton Goldberg, Gwen Furbee Ying, Rebecca Sandrok, and Julian Leviton. Rhona has maintained a private studio in Skokie since 1979. Her students perform several times a year at studio and community concerts. Rhona has developed many unique events for her studio including her annual Solofestival and Practiceathon Fund Raising events.

Rhona is also on faculty at Midwest Young Artists in Highwood, Illinois where she conducts the Reading Orchestra, coaches chamber music, and is the director of the Young Strings Summer Chamber Music Camp. She has served on the board of directors of Midwest Young Artists since 1993 and is also a member of the executive committee. Her many alumni have attended prestigious colleges and universities on scholarship throughout the United States.

Rhona was recently chosen as the Illinois ASTA Studio teacher of the year for 2008! She is very grateful to her colleagues for their recognition.Rhona is the former co-director of the Elmhurst College Suzuki Program and a former faculty member of National Louis University. Her broad educational background allows her to work effectively with students of all ability levels.

Rhona has been married to her husband Richard for over 30 years. Her daughter Jessie is a professional cellist based in New York, and her son Seth is an investment banker in Chicago.

Mandy DennisMandy Dennis, Cello, won the Junior High String Division of the MTNA National Competition in Albuquerque as a young cellist, her performance there resulting in invitations to be a featured guest artist at the Illinois, California, Iowa and Oregon State Music Teachers Conventions. She was a finalist in the Stulberg International String Competition and prize winner in the Johansen International String Competition in Washington, D.C. Internationally, she captured the audience prize of the Skene Competition in Aberdeen, Scotland. She was also a prize winner in Indiana University’s Concerto Competition, where she received her B.A in Music degree, as well as a coveted Performer’s Certificate. Her teachers have included Janos Starker, Tsuyo Tsutsumi, Helga Winold and Hans Jensen.

Mandy is also an avid lover of chamber music. She has participated in the well-known Chautauqua Institute in New York, the Next Generation Concert Series in Maine, and is a two-time medallist at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. She currently coaches chamber music ensembles at Midwest Young Artists. She has performed as a soloist in the Ravinia Festival’s Kids Concerts, three times with the Knox Galesburg Symphony. the Kankakee Valley, Glacier and Champaign-Urbana Symphonies.

Paula FischerPaula Fischer, Violin/Viola, has 35 years of experience teaching and coaching young musicians. She is a faculty member at MYA, and also teaches chamber music to students at Niles North, Niles West and Loyola. In addition to teaching, Paula is also a freelance musician and very active performer. She has played for the Lake Forest Symphony, Chicago String Ensemble, and she is currently performing with the Evanston Symphony Orchestra.

Paula also maintains a home studio in Skokie, where she conducts private lessons.


Beatriz Snow, Piano, studied as a child with late pianist Ramon Serratos, and then with Maria Teresa Rodriguez, one of Mexico's finest pianists, at the National Conservatory of Music, where Beatriz graduated obtaining the Concert Pianist Diploma with honors. She also holds a Master Degree in Piano Performance from the Meadows School of the Arts at SMU (Southern Methodist University), where she was a student of Dallas Symphony pianist Alfred Mouledous.

At SMU, she had the opportunity of working as an accompanist for the studio of late Russian cellist Lev Aronson, playing for many of his students. One of the highlights of this time was playing for several cellists at the legendary Mtislav Rostropovich's master class. She received the eli Epstein B'nai Brith Award (one of 3 select recipients in the School of the Arts), and the Meadows Artistic Achievement Scholarship Award.

As an active chamber musician, Beatriz Helguera-Snow has played extensively the repertoire for cello and piano, violin and piano, and the literature for trios, quartets and quintets. Beatriz was part of the faculty at Betty Haag Suzuki School for almost a decade, and since 1997 holds a private piano studio for students ages 4 to adult.



Student Eligibility

No prior chamber music experience is necessary. No audition tape is required.
Minimum Level of Experience
Violin: Suzuki Book 4 or equivalency
Viola: Suzuki Book 3 or equivalency
Cello: Suzuki Book 2 or equivalency
Piano: Mozart Sonatas or equivalency
ALL Pianists must submit a recording on CD of current repertoire. Label the CD with the student's name with the pieces recorded and each composer.

A Private Teacher Recommendation Form is required for students not currently in MYA programs so that we can appropriately group students into ensembles.

Tuition and Application

Students wishing to attend the Young Musicians Chamber Music Camp should complete the Secure Online Application Form and submit the non-refundable $75 application fee. This application fee will be applied toward summer camp tuition for students who enroll. A private teacher recommendation is required for students not enrolled in Midwest Young Artists during the year so that we can group ensembles appropriately.

Upon receiving notification of your acceptance, you must remit a $125 deposit. Deposits are nonrefundable except in cases of medical necessity. This deposit will be applied toward your invoice, which must be paid in full by June 10,  2010.
