Double Reed Workshop
For students interested in a professional playing career as a double reed player
The Midwest Young Artists Double Reed Workshop is designed to give students comprehensive training in performance and practice techniques necessary to be successful in your school band or orchestra program. Students will also participate in a culminating performance at the end of the week and inspirational master classes.
Location
The Double Reed Workshop takes place at the MYA Center at Fort Sheridan.

Faculty
Naomi Bensdorf Frisch enjoys an active career as a performer and music educator. Along with holding principal Oboe positions in the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, and the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, Ms. Bensdorf Frisch performs regularly with the Chicago Chamber Orchestra during their season at the Chicago Cultural Center and as principal Oboe for their residency at the Southern Illinois Music Festival. As a soloist, Naomi has performed with the Southwest Michigan Symphony, the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. In demand as a freelance musician, Ms. Bensdorf Frisch has recently performed with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Tulsa Opera and Symphony Orchestras, the Elgin Symphony, the South Bend Symphony, Light Opera Works, and others. She can be heard on recordings with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and the Elgin Symphony and in a collection of the chamber music of renowned Chicago composer M. William Karlins, available on Hungaroton Records.
A native of Evanston, Illinois, Bensdorf Frisch received her Bachelor of Music Magna cum Laude from Northwestern University, and her Masters of Music with Distinction from DePaul University. As a 1999-2000 Fulbright Scholar, Naomi traveled to Germany to study with internationally renowned Oboist Ingo Goritzki and perform with the Southwest German Baroque Soloists. Her principal American teachers include Robert Morgan, Ray Still, and Judith Kulb.
In addition to performing, Ms. Bensdorf Frisch works often with the Chicago area’s young musicians. She is in demand as a private Oboe teacher, offering private Oboe lessons at the Music Institute of Chicago and the North Shore School for the Arts, among others. Currently, she is a member of the music faculty at North Park University and DePaul University. Naomi coaches woodwind chamber music for the award-winning Midwest Young Artists program and runs their summer woodwind chamber music camp.
Amanda Szczys, a native of Toledo, Ohio, attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with her Bachelor of Music degree in Bassoon Performance. In 2003, she received her Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan. She was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and has also played with the Milwaukee, Toledo, and New World Symphonies.
Amanda enjoys teaching private lessons and has served on the faculties of the Interlochen Arts Camp All-State Program, the University of Michigan Summer Arts Institute, and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Preparatory Department. Her principal teachers included Richard Beene, William Winstead, and Martin James.
Guest Artists
Robert Morgan, oboeis Solo English Horn and Assistant Principal Oboe of the Lyric Opera of Chicago Orchestra and Principal Oboist with Music of the Baroque and Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra. He coaches woodwind chamber music at Northwestern University and maintains a private studio. He is a frequent soloist with numerous area orchestras and musical organizations and has performed at the White House with Music of the Baroque and with members of the Guarnieri Quartet in Maryland. He is a graduate of Indiana University and also studied with Ray Still, Marc Lifschey and John Mack.
Marc Vallon, bassoon was appointed Assistant Professor of Bassoon at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the fall of 2004. A native of France, Vallon studied at the Paris Conservatory, where he earned two Premier Prix-for bassoon studies and chamber music. During his conservatory studies, he began playing in various Paris orchestras, performing under many renowned conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, Karl Boehm, and Lorin Maazel. He was a founding member of the Nielsen Quintet in 1975, and he collaborated with the Ensemble Intercontemporain conducted by Pierre Boulez. Mr. Vallon was first bassoonist with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra for more than 20 years and performed with other leading early music. Mr. Vallon has taught modern and baroque bassoon at the Paris Conservatory and the Lyon Conservatory, and has given master classes worldwide. His interest in young students led him to create the Concours National du Jeune Bassonist, a nationwide French competition for bassoonists aged 14 and younger.
Student Eligibility
Students must be in at least 6th grade as of fall 2010.
Tuition and Application
Students wishing to attend the Double Reed Workshop should complete the Secure Online Application Form and submit the non-refundable $75 application fee as soon as possible. This application fee will be applied toward summer camp tuition for students who enroll. No audition is required. Applications will be accepted until all available spots have been filled.
Upon receiving notification of your acceptance, you must remit a $125 deposit. Deposits are nonrefundable except in cases of medical necessity. This deposit will be applied toward your invoice, which must be paid in full by June 10, 2010.Tuition for this workshop includes participation in Evening Orchestras, Evening Wind Symphony, or Evening Big Bands.
