Chamber Music Policies
The success of the MYA Chamber Music Program is based on excellent teacher/coaching, student interest/talent, and an environment that encourages chamber music making. There are few chamber music programs in the U.S. which devote the same attention, energy and opportunities as we do in MYA. This is because we believe chamber music is of vital importance in the education of our students. Chamber musicians are flexible musicians. They are leaders when the part calls for it; they are responders when others are in the position to lead; they are joiners when they play the same part as others; they are cooperators when their part fits with or into another. They make the best orchestra musicians as well as the best soloists!
Chamber Music Participation Policy
A requirement for participation in the Concert and/or Symphony Orchestras is that students be available to participate in the Chamber Music Program if they are assigned to a chamber music ensemble. Students who do not participate in the MYA Orchestra Program may be assigned to a chamber music ensemble when an opening cannot be filled with current MYA Orchestra members; however, MYA orchestra members receive first priority.
A few younger students in Prep Orchestra may be given the opportunity to join a chamber music ensemble, but participation is not a requirement. Students are placed in trios, quartets, quintets, sextets, or octets based on compatible ability, age and interest levels. MYA will try, but does not guarantee placement in a chamber music ensemble.
Students assigned to Chamber Music ensembles should:
- Prepare your own part so that the coach does not have to spend too much extra time on your part in the rehearsal.
- Make every effort to attend every rehearsal.
- If you are unable to attend a rehearsal, call or e-mail the coach as soon as you become aware of the problem so that he/she can plan for your absence at the coaching session. Only a coach can cancel a scheduled rehearsal!
Your coach should pick dates to set as performance goals. Clear your calendar at the beginning of the year for participation in Sunday afternoon performances.
Entrance into the Chamber Music Program
Students are assigned into chamber music ensembles based on their age, ability, availability, and what instrument they play. All members of the Junior and Senior Orchestra must be available to participate in a Chamber Music ensemble if placed. Rehearsals are scheduled when students and appropriate coaches are available (usually on Saturdays). Students are expected to attend all rehearsals in the semester. Students may audition for placement in chamber music ensembles if they do not participate in the MYA Orchestra Program, but MYA students are given first preference if there is a good match.
