Additional Activities & Events
Symphony Tour Plan
Travel experiences are available for senior ensemble members and participation is strongly encouraged. Students who do not participate lose the musical, educational and social bonding opportunities that other students gain through participation. So that families can financially plan for these trips, we have a 3 Year Tour Plan. The next three year schedule is as follows: 2002-2003-a continental U.S. trip, at intermediate cost; November of 2003 (Thanksgiving weekend) an international tour to Korea. Other Senior Ensembles (Jazz & Chorale) will adopt a similar tour plan, but each ensemble alternating international travel.
Symphony Orchestra Sectionals
Symphony Orchestra also has extra scheduled sectionals 2-3 times a year before each concert. These sectionals are mandatory and attendance is taken. Occasionally, additional rehearsals are scheduled at times outside the regular rehearsals on Saturday. These rehearsals are counted as extra credit towards absences. They may also include overnight lock-ins with Saturday evening and Sunday morning rehearsals.
Cadet, Prep and Concert Orchestra Potlucks
For the Concert and Prep Orchestras, there are family potluck dinners and extra evening rehearsals before each concert. Attendance at these rehearsals counts as extra credit towards absences.
Concerts for School Children
We have started a series of outreach Concerts for School Children with Fred Koch. These are scheduled only once for each ensemble (Prep, Concert Orchestra/Jazz Band) on a school day. We feel that the value of sharing our younger members' great talents and bringing music to their peers is worth missing one day of school/year and hope that parents will facilitate this. Letters to take to your child's school administrators will be provided. These concerts also count as extra credit towards absences.
Master Classes
MYA will continue to bring in outstanding artist/teachers to work with MYA members and chamber music ensembles. All students are encouraged to attend and learn from watching these master teachers.
