Audition Information for Orchestra

Auditions for the Orchestra and Chamber Music Programs

Auditions for the 2017-2018 season are held in April. Audition requirements and excerpts for the 2017-2018 season are posted here.

Students should prepare:

  • 2 Prepared Pieces: two contrasting movements/works of their own choosing. The chosen works should be complete movements/works, NOT shortened excerpts. These two pieces can include etudes or solos. One movement/work should demonstrate the student’s technical level and the other should demonstrate the student’s musical and tonal abilities. (Students auditioning for the Symphony Orchestra generally are performing major concertos.) You will not be able to audition with an accompanist.
  • Scales: Students should prepare scales as follows.
  • Cadet and Concertino Orchestra: C, G, and D Major scales (note ~ 90 bpm)
  • Philharmonia Orchestra: C, G, D and F Major scales (note ~ 90 bpm). Violin/Viola/Cello: prefer at least one 3 octave scale. Woodwinds: add a chromatic scale.
  • Concert Orchestra: all Major scales through 4 sharps and flats (note = 120 bpm). Violin/Viola/Cello: prefer 3 octave scales. Woodwinds: add a chromatic scale.
  • Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Music: all Major scales (note = 120 bpm). All Strings: prefer 3 octave scales. Wind/Brass scales to demonstrate ability to play complete range of instrument. Woodwinds: add a chromatic scale.
  • Orchestral Excerpts: For 2017-2018 Season Auditions, the assigned Orchestra excerpts are posted below. Chamber Music Only auditionees must prepare either the Concert or Symphony Orchestra requirements.

If you are unsure how to prepare for your audition, or what orchestra to audition for, click here for Suggested Scales, Literature, and Skill Levels

If ALL audition requirements are not prepared or performed, students will be asked to re-audition.
